From the Editor's Desk
What a month! The Wedding Banquet Asia tour drew endless cheers. This month, the show premiered in the US in Seattle. For those who haven't yet seen it in Seattle, 2g night at The Wedding Banquet: The Musical is this Saturday in Issaquah. And then here in New York, Welly Yang and Dina Morishita, flew from Seattle to share their stories at the Concert of Excellence (COE) Benefit Committee reception. Read on to find out how more! The pair, along with 2g artists Julie Danao, Robert Orosco, and Jade Stice raised their voices to give us a taste of the marvel to expect for this year's COE. Honoree Jadin Wong also came out to support the event and filled the house with laughter in sharing her personal journey to success. If you missed it, don't worry! You have a chance to see it all in the 3rd Annual Concert of Excellence! Mark the date - December 1st, New York State Theater at Lincoln Center. Stay tuned--tickets will go on sale shortly! If you would like to volunteer or help support COE, please contact me.

Behind the Scenes: The Wedding Banquet Premiers in the US

After a tremendous reception in Asia, The Wedding Banquet, produced by Second Generation (2g), premiered in the US earlier this month at the Village Theatre in Seattle. "People at the Village Theatre are very supportive of new works," says Dina Morishita, starring as Wei Wei. Although the integrated topics of different racial, generational, and sexual cultures presented in the musical are not tackled often for Seattle audiences, Robb Hunt, executive producer of Village Theater boasts much enthusiasm for presenting the show. Meet the Artist: Devanand Janki - Director, Choreographer, Actor

New York City is a long way from Canberra, Australia. It's a long way from Germany, too. And Edmonton, Canada isn't all that close to the Big Apple either. Yet Devanand Janki (Dev) has lived in all those places one time or another only to end up here-the musical theater capitol of the world. "I always knew I would end up in New York. I never gave myself any (other) options," says Dev, a Lucille Lortel Award recipient who will be choreographing Second Generation's (2g) third annual benefit, Concert of Excellence (COE), at the New York State Theater on December 1. FAQ
Q: Why is the 2003 Annual Concert of Excellence being held at the New York State Theater at Lincoln Center?
Built by famed architect Phillip Johnson (AT&T Building & MoMA) in 1964, the New York State Theater has been home to the New York City Opera and New York City Ballet for four decades. One of the grandest example of classical theatrical architecture in the country, the building houses a breatktaking Promenade -- where this year's pre-concert and post-concert receptions will be held. The 2,800 seat proscenium stage was built to George Balanchine's specifications, where every seat in the house has full view of every dancer on stage, from head to toe.

Second Generation is proud to present the Third Annual Concert of Excellence at this fabled hall, the first Asian American organization to host its annual gala there. It also marks the first time that our annual, one-night-only performance will be held in a theater, offering production values unavailable at concert halls such as Carnegie and Alice Tully Halls in previous years. Producing the annual Concert of Excellence at this remarkable venue will truly make it an evening to remember.
