Behind the Scenes: The Concert of Excellence

For the past two years, Second Generation (2g) has presented the Concert of Excellence (COE), featuring the Remy Martin XO Excellence Awards to honor deserved artists of Asian American heritage. In the past, audiences have filled Alice Tully Hall and the prestigious Carnegie Hall to pay tribute to stars such as Tan Dun, Zhang Yi Mou, Coco Lee, and Jason Scott Lee.

This year, to be held at the beautiful State Theater at Lincoln Center, the Broadway-caliber extravaganza promises to be the most magnificent yet. COE will honor Tony Award winner B.D. Wong (M. Butterfly, Law & Order, SI/U. Oz), Golden Globe - nominated actor Lou Diamond Phillips (La Bamba, Courage Under Fire), acclaimed actor Bai Ling (Red Corner, Anna & the King, the upcoming Star Wars: Episode 3), and legendary dancer and talent manager Jadin Wong (Forbidden City nightclub).

With less than 2 weeks to go, preparation for the concert is in full swing. Led by Artistic Director Welly Yang, Lucille Lortel Award winner Director/Choreographer Devanand Janki, and Tony Award-winning Musical Director Jason Robert Brown, the concert promises audiences a memorable night of song and dance.

This year's COE will be the platform for numerous impressive debuts that are not to be missed! Jason Robert Brown, Tony Award winning composer of Parade, Urban Cowboy, Last Five Years, and Songs for A New World (2001 COE Opening Number), will be writing a new song for the entire 30-voice company of this year's concert. New York audiences will finally get to sample songs from The Wedding Banquet: The Musical, performed by the original cast members, Welly Yang, Dina Morishita, and Tyley Ross. Renowned Taiwanese platinum-selling superstar Tsai Chin will also make her New York debut at CoE, singing the Mandarin classic - Infinite Love (Bu Liao Qing).
