Dear Friends of 2g,

I’m very pleased to share an important announcement, and introduce you to the newly appointed third Artistic Director of Second Generation, Carla Ching.

Carla should be familiar to 2g followers as the author of plays in both of our recent festivals of new work, TEN and ELEVEN, where her play TBA was the centerpiece production in 2008. With her fiercely independent artistic vision, her strong background of accomplishment as a teaching artist, and her extraordinary commitment to promoting Asian American arts and artists, we’re incredibly excited about her becoming 2g’s new artistic leader, and are extremely confident in her ability to continue and amplify 2g’s mission of fostering a new generation of Asian American dramatic arts.

On a personal note, it has been an extraordinary honor to serve these past five years as 2g’s second Artistic Director, and to continue the valuable work begun by Founder Welly Yang. I’m just as excited about continuing to serve Second Generation as its Executive Producer, alongside Carla and longtime 2g President Gladys Chen. I’m deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to guide the organization into what has become one of the country’s leading incubators of new Asian American theater artists, and I’m excited to continue that work in this new capacity.

2g will, of course, continue its commitment to reaching out to new generations of Asian American artists, and cultivating relationships with new audiences, and I’m so excited about the many ways in which that reach will grow under Carla’s leadership.

2g Family,

100_0927

Second Generation has been such an important creative home for me over the last couple of years. So I truly feel privileged to continue the work that Welly and Lloyd have done in laying a foundation for a space where Asian American theater artists can innovate, experiment and play and where audiences can be provoked, inspired, surprised and moved.

To the artists: It is with great excitement that I join the 2g team to help provide a respite spot, trampoline, sounding board, play space and creative haven for other art makers, dreamers, instigators and raconteurs of every kind. The world is in need of art that asks difficult questions as well as art that makes us laugh until we’re crying. I hope you’ll come out to play.

To our beloved audience: Join us as we endeavor to have some serious fun at THIRTEEN, an Instaplay event of epic proportions at the beautiful Walkerspace in April. We’re making this especially for you and we really want to share it with you. More details coming soon.

My door is always open. My ear is to the ground. Your thoughts are welcome. Let us know if you have ideas or if you see something truly righteous that we should all know about.

Let’s stir up some trouble.

See you on Facebook, Twitter and at THIRTEEN in April.

– Carla Ching
