Synopsis

"Hello Wai Tung! It's your mother calling..."

Wai Tung Gao is a Taiwanese American living in New York City and growing tired of fielding phone calls from his marriage-minded mother, tired of filling out the matchmaking questionnaires she sends from Taipei, unable to bring himself to tell her he's already found the love of his life: Simon, who's not only not Taiwanese, but a man.

Simon playfully goads Wai Tung into filling out the latest dating-service form, which they do together, to an unexpected end. Despite the outlandish requirements they listed, Ma Gao calls a week or two later with the exciting news that the service has found the perfect match. So Wai Tung is forced to escort "Little Sister Mao" around Manhattan, where they encounter a tenant from one of the apartment buildings he owns -- Chinese immigrant Wei Wei Gu, who knows Wai Tung is gay and reveals his secret. And though Wai Tung and Little Sister Mao agree to keep their parents in the dark, Wai Tung feels even greater pressure to please his parents.

Wai Tung and Simon visit Wei Wei, who's not only three months behind on her rent but about to be deported. Simon has a plan: Wai Tung and Wei Wei will marry -- she gets her green card and he gets his mother off his back.  It seems the perfect plan, until Wai Tung's parents announce they are flying to New York City to throw the couple a wedding banquet. Ma and Pa Gao arrive at Simon and Wai Tung's brownstone just as some frantic redecoration is finished. They give Wai Tung and Wei Wei a number of traditional, and lavish, wedding gifts, before Wai Tung dampens their ardor with the announcement that the marriage is to take place the very next day at City Hall. Lunching at a Chinese restaurant after the hasty service, the family is greeted by Old Chen, formerly Pa Gao's servant, now a rich restaurant owner. Hearing the news of "Young Master" Wai Tung's wedding, he insists on throwing the couple a banquet. Buoyed by the idea, Pa and Ma Gao whip up the traditional trappings, and Wai Tung and Wei Wei are forced to go along, leaving Simon feeling lonely and left out.

After a raucous banquet, Wai Tung and Wei Wei are coerced into bed by friends who have invaded the honeymoon suite. And, left alone, Wei Wei decides to consummate the marriage; Wai Tung, protesting but helpless, goes along.
